Crimea State Medical University named after S. I. Georgievsky

History of the Crimea State Medical University goes back to the beginning of the 21st century: in 1918 it was medical faculty of Taurida University.

In 1931 it separated and became an autonomous unit - Crimea Medical Institute.

Since 1995 the higher school has been named in honor of Sergey Ivanovich Georgievsky (rector of the institute in 1951-1970). In 1998 the higher school became a university with the 4th (highest) accreditation level.

Throughout these years the medical school has been a center for academic and vocational medical education and medical science in the Crimea at the same time offering specialized consultation in the directions General Medicine and Pharmacy.

Today it is an up-to-date educational institution upgrading itself to keep abreast of global trends in medical education and research, developing its intellectual potential and providing top specialists for medical services. The University has always been striving for excellence in teaching and research.


To enhance the quality of education ,the consecutive model of medical education has been created at the University: the preparatory department, preparatory courses and medical lyceum; 5 faculties to train doctors and a faculty of post-diploma education.

Junior specialists and bachelors are trained in the specialities: Nursing, Prosthetic Dentistry, Pharmacy; doctors, in the specialities: General Medicine, Pediatrics, Clinical Pharmacy and Dentistry. Internship is available in 22 specialities. Post-diploma education includes residency, Master’s program and postgraduate study or Ph.D program. Refresher courses in 48 specialities are available at the faculty of post-diploma education.

The University has elaborated a holistic approach as to the organizational, scientific and methodological aspects of the educational process. The clinical departments are provided with all the necessary equipment and demonstration aids: educational films, moulages, phantoms, diagnostic inventory - everything has been done for the educational process to meet the modern requirements. It is particularly important nowadays when the University has actively started the transformation of educational process according to the Bologna system.

The University is constantly a leader in the rating among the Ukrainian higher medical schools according to the results of the state licensed exams “STEP-M”, “

STEP-1”, “STEP-2”, “STEP-3”. The University is particularly proud of its highly qualified academic staff, which totals 850 persons: 99 Doctors of Science, Professors, and 356 Candidates of Science (Ph.D. holders), Associate Professors. 40 University professors are academicians and corresponding members of domestic and foreign Academies of Sciences; 14 are State Prize laureates, 60 have honorary titles.

About 5 thousand students study at the Crimea State Medical University named after S. I. Georgievsky, including 1.7 thousand foreign citizens from 40 countries of the world.

Since 1999 English has been the second language of instruction, which makes CSMU attractive for foreign citizens coming here to study. For the constant development of cooperation with foreign countries and high quality of education the University was awarded the title of laureate in the rating of Ukrainian higher schools “Sofia Kievskaya – 2004”.

For over 90 years the University has been training professional specialists. Academic excellence has been highly appreciated by the International Education Society, which has conferred the University AA rank denoting TOP INSTITUTION THAT IS INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN AND RECOGNIZED.

Accreditations

 

Crimea State Medical University  is one of the oldest and leading medical higher institutions of Ukraine. State Establishment  Crimea State Medical University was founded in the year of 1956. At presently in April  2011 about 2500 foreign students are studying from 60 countries.

All educational programs are regulated and approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The degrees and certificates issued to graduated foreign students by the State Establishment  Crimea State Medical University  are legalized by the Ministry of heath of Ukraine and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Crimea State Medical University is recognized and listed in the International Medical Education Directory . This accreditation allows the Crimea State Medical University to be eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examinations and enter Postgraduate Medical (Residency) training in United States.

IMED accreditation is recognized by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) for eligibility of graduates to obtain certification and Licensure.

Crimea State Medical University is recognized by the World Health Organization.

The students and graduates of Crimea State Medical University are eligible to participate in the United States Medical Licensing Examination & receive ECFMG certification. The ECFMG certification requires all graduates to have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (both sections), submit a final transcript, and provide a copy of the graduate's diploma for verification. Once ECFMG certification has been granted the graduates are eligible for Postgraduate Medical education (Residency Training) in the United States.

 

All prospective and current students who wish to practice in the United States are encouraged to educate themselves on the licensure policies in their respective states. This information can be obtained by going to the Federation of State Medical Boards of United States (FSMB) website or contacting them.

 

Crimea state Medical University is recognized by the Indian Medical Council, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, European Council of Medicine and General Medical Council (limited Registration) of UK.

Crimea state Medical University has a joint researches and partnership relations with many Scientific Institutions of former USSR and all over the world, such as The Poland Medical Academy, The Cambridge University, The Virden University, Clinics of Urgent Medicine in Germany, Belgium, Austria and Israel. Medical center of Cardiff (England), Medical Center in Sent-Etien (France), New York Medical Center, Ukrainian Medical Society in Canada and Austria.
